Photoshop Tip

If you're using the Photoshop Brush Tool (B), and everything seems fine. Sometimes you select the same tool a little later, and instead of the currently selected brush size, it displays a crosshair cursor. The problem is your Caps Lock key is turned on. This changes your Brush cursor from displaying brush size to the crosshair. The crosshair is actually a feature to help you see the precise center of your brush. 9/3/06

Quark Tip

When saving a Photoshop EPS, in the dialog box that pops up, select Macintosh (JPEG) in the drop-down menu, for the preview, instead of 8bit/pixel. Now, when you place your EPS into Quark, it should look crystal clear, rather than the pixelated mess you normally get with a default 8bit preview. You could of course use a TIF preview, but the JPEG preview will be much smaller in size, so your screen will redraw it faster. This does not affect color profiles or separations. This is simply a WYSIWYG thing for the preview file. 8/3/06

Type Outline Stroke

Stroking Type has always been a problem, because half the stroke has always covered part of the letter form, making typographers everywhere cringe. There's an easy solution. Select the text and convert the Type to Outline. Your Type becomes a vector object that can no longer be edited as text. In the Object menu, go to Compound Path > Make, and make all of the outline type into ONE Path (no Fill, no Stroke), so none of the characters will be in front of each other when they're Stroked. Apply a Fill and a Stroke. Increase the thickness of the Stroke in the Stroke palette (Window > Stroke) until it's covering most of the Fill. Now - make sure your Stroke palette options are showing, and next to Align Stroke, choose the last button on the right (Align Stroke to Outside). The entire Stroke pushes outside the Fill, uncovering the real letter forms. 6/7/06
